France

About trees…My fascination with trees started I left Caithness in northern Scotland, where it is too windy for trees. I am much more appreciate of trees nowadays. My trip to France in August 2018 solidified my interest in trees, their shapes, their majesty, their delicate outlines. I am even fascinated by dead trees! There is a marvellous one just down the road from John in a village I can’t remember the name of beginning with H.

I actually started drawing trees at Craigavon Lakes in Ireland. It is a very special place. I digress…The beauty and splendour of trees in France are second to none. The forests, woodlands, copses, avenues of trees, even solitary trees in the middle of fields are a balm to the soul. Think of the Rhianna tree in Northern Ireland… I’ll try to find it again, and take a photo. I would sit for hours looking at the trees in the pretty village of Monfaucon, in the Midi Pyrenees, 2 hours south of Toulouse. There are many trees of different nationalities in Monfaucon. A tree is not a just a tree, it is a living thing and therefore has a nationality.

The avenues of beech trees line many roads in France – inviting you to the town or village you are about to enter.

Drawing trees was a major part of my time spent in France, I can’t say “holiday” as Christiane was a slave driver (joke!). Sweeping up the pool leaves every morning at 6.30 was relaxing. The poor trees had shed some of their clothes – an inevitability to allow them to regenerate… I guess humans do that as well though Adrian doesn’t like talk of nudity. I told him, jokingly, that i had been swimming in the river in France naked… being from a Presbyterian background, I guess he would be!

Mimosa, palm trees, beech, fig, apples, plums, oranges, lemons – they all abound – the shapes reaching for the sky. If trees are human, are we cannibals if we eat their fruit… food for thought!
